Other Options

The remaining options on this tab are used to convert E-Mail and Internet addresses that may appear in your genealogical data into actual hypertext links.

Option Meaning
Convert e-mail addresses to actual links

Check this option if you want e-mail addresses in your GEDCOM file to be displayed as actual e-mail links. When GED-GEN encounters an e-mail address in your text, it instead will display a link to that e-mail address. This allows a visitor to your web page to click on the link to create an e-mail.

E-Mail addresses must be prefixed with the string "mailto:" as described below. For example if the following line appears in your notes about an individual:

Information obtained from mailto:me@mysite.com.

It will be displayed as:

Information obtained from me@mysite.com.
Hide e-mail links from harvesters

Enable this option to reduce the chances that e-mail address harvesters will recognize the e-mail links created by GED-GEN.

Some nefarious people automatically scan websites looking for e-mail addresses. These addresses are collected and used to send unsolicited e-mails known as spam or junk e-mail. The process of automatically gathering e-mail links is sometimes known as harvesting.

When enabled, this option uses JavaScript to "hide" e-mail addresses. It is not guaranteed however. A resourceful harvester may still circumvent this method.

Convert Internet addresses to actual links

Check this option if you want Internet addresses in your GEDCOM file to be displayed as actual hypertext links. When GED-GEN encounters an address, it instead will display a link to that website. A visitor to your web page who clicks on the link will go directly to that website.

Internet addresses must be prefixed with the string "http:/" or "ftp:/" as described below. For example if the following line appears in your notes about an individual:

Information obtained from http://www.sample.com.

It will be displayed as:

Information obtained from http://www.sample.com.
Frame target for websites

Leave this option empty for normal operation. When a visitor clicks on a website link, that website will display in place of your GED-GEN web page.

If you want the website corresponding to a link to display in a new Internet browser window, enter the reserved name _blank (i.e., an underscore character followed by the word blank).

Note

The frame target is ignored when generating pages that conform to the HTML 4.01 Strict standard. Please refer to HTML Conformance.

For advanced users: If your website uses HTML frames, you can specify the frame in which to display the website corresponding to a link. This option controls the target= attribute in a website link. Enter the name of a frame window, or use the reserved name _top to replace your frameset page.

Link Conversions

The conversion of Internet and e-mail addresses to actual links takes place only within research notes, marriage notes, source citations, imported text, and bibliography and repository entries. In order for Internet addresses to be recognized in your text, you must prefix them appropriately. If GED-GEN does not recognize an address, it will still display it as plain text.

An address must begin with one of the following prefixes:

For example "http://home.sample.com" is recognized, but "home.sample.com" is not. Furthermore:
