GED-GEN was developed according to the following specifications.
Platform: To run the GED-GEN program, you need Microsoft Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT 4.0 or later. GED-GEN was designed to be used with a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels or larger.
HTML: The web pages generated conform to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) version "4.01 Strict." They use external Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and optionally employ HTML frames to display footnotes.
Internet Browser: The web pages generated may be viewed by most Internet browsers running on most platforms (e.g., Microsoft Windows, Apple, Linux, Unix, etc). For best presentation, visitors to your website should use Microsoft Internet Explorer version 8.0 or later, or FireFox version 3.6 or later, or Google Chrome version 5.0 or later, or a browser with similar features.
There may be minor differences in the appearance of web pages on different Internet browsers. Browsers differ between vendors and even between browser versions from the same vendor.
GEDCOM Standard: GED-GEN is based on the GEDCOM standard version 5.5.1 (draft), dated 2 October 1999.
GED-GEN supports references to multimedia items contained in your GEDCOM file. It does not support embedded items. An embedded item means the contents of an item, like an image, is included within the GEDCOM file itself.
Character Sets: GED-GEN supports the UTF-8, ANSI, and ANSEL character sets. If your GEDCOM file is in ANSEL format, GED-GEN attempts to convert ANSEL characters to ANSI. (Don't worry, it will not modify your GEDCOM file.) However not all ANSEL characters can be converted. For best results, specify UTF-8, ANSI, or an equivalent character set when you export your family data to a GEDCOM file.
The web pages it generates always specify the "utf-8" character set. ANSI or ANSEL data are converted to UTF-8. GED-GEN does not currently support the full Unicode character set.
