How many families can GED-GEN process?

In the un-registered mode, GED-GEN is limited to generating family pages for 500 families. When you register the program, this limit is removed.

There should be no upper limit to the number of individuals and families that GED-GEN can process. It depends on your computer system. The faster your computer processor, and the more memory it has, the faster it can process a large GEDCOM file. However a larger GEDCOM file will result in several megabytes worth of web pages. Keep in mind that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may also limit the amount of space for your website.

GED-GEN users report they successfully processed GEDCOM files containing more than 30,000 individuals. One has more than 79,000 individuals in 23,000 families.

  1. My fathers tree has over 121,872 names in it and increasing day by day. He is using Legacy to generate the website and is looking for something that has a bit more ability to change the layout and is wondering if this program can support the number if individuals put in background picture as in the existing site and put in own spacers etc. Basically can the page templates be changed.

    • GED-GEN provides numerous customization options that allow you to seamlessly integrate family pages with your website. It does not use page templates, but you can change the appearance of nearly every aspect using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). You can even insert advanced features like javascript and PHP to match your other web pages.

The large number of individuals you have is not a problem. Except, in version 1.8 and 1.8.1 there is a small problem that results in incomplete index pages only when you have more than 30,000 individuals. Until the next version of GED-GEN is available, registered users should contact me to obtain a replacement file to correct this condition.
